Function essentialism about artifacts

چکیده

Much recent discussion has focused on the nature of artifacts, particularly whether artifacts have essences. While general consensus is that are at least intention-dependent, an equally common view function essentialism about essentially functional objects and membership in artifact kind determined by a particular, shared function. This paper argues false. First, two component conditions given clear precise formulation, after which counterexamples offered to each. Second, ways handle suggested Randall Dipert Simon Evnine considered rejected. Third, I then consider prospects for restricting so-called technical as Lynne Baker does, argue this, too, fails. thereby consolidates scattered literature shows that, despite seeming plausibility thesis, it should be rejected account

Essentialism and Anti-Essentialism in Feminist Philosophy

The heated feminist debates over 'essentialism' of the 1980s and early 1990s have largely died away, yet they raised fundamental questions for feminist moral and political philosophy which have still to be fully explored. Centrally at issue in feminist controversies over essentialism was whether there are any shared characteristics common to all women, which unify them as a group. Many leading ...

Young children's rapid learning about artifacts.

Tool use is central to interdisciplinary debates about the evolution and distinctiveness of human intelligence, yet little is actually known about how human conceptions of artifacts develop. Results across these two studies show that even 2-year-olds approach artifacts in ways distinct from captive tool-using monkeys. Contrary to adult intuition, children do not treat all objects with appropria...

Dispositional essentialism

Dispositions, Mellor once remarked, are as shameful in many eyes as pregnant spinsters used to be, ' ideally to be explained away, or entitled to a shotgun wedding to take the name of some decently real categorical property' [18]. This 'Victorian prejudice' against dispositions still exists. On reflection, this fact is perhaps not really surprising. Dispositions have dallied in most corners of ...

Topological Essentialism

This paper analyses topological variants of mereological essentialism, the thesis that an object cannot have different parts than the ones it has. In particular, we examine de dicto and de re versions of two theses: (i) that an object cannot change its external connections (e.g., adjacent objects cannot be separated), and (ii) that an object cannot change its topological genus (e.g., a doughnut...

A developmental dissociation between category and function judgments about novel artifacts.

Two studies investigated the relative importance of information about intended design and current use on judgments about the function (Experiment 1) or category (Experiment 2) of novel artifacts in preschool children and adults. Adults assigned function and name on the basis of information about design across all conditions, while children's decisions about function dissociated from decisions a...
